James Alan Gardner

James Alan Gardner (born January 10, 1955 in Bradford , Ontario ) is a Canadian science fiction writer.

Life

James Alan Gardner grew up in Bradford, Ontario, a town in the Greater Toronto Area and Simcoe , Ontario near Lake Erie , and lives in Kitchener / Waterloo , Ontario. He completed his studies in applied mathematics at the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics and a Master of Mathematics. In 1989 he completed the Clarion West Writers' Workshop . His teachers there were Orson Scott Card , Karen Jay Fowler , Connie Willis , Lucius Shepard , Amy Stout, and Roger Zelazny . At a Writers of the Future Workshop (registered trademark of Scientology ) his teacher was Algis Budrys .

Write

After writing for the mathematical journal and the theater group of the University of Waterloo, his short story won The Children of the Creche in 1990 the Gold Pen Award of the Writers and Illustrators of the Future . In 1991, his short story Muffin Explains Teleology to the World at Large won the Aurora Award , a Canadian science fiction prize. He won it again in 1998 for the short story Three Hearings on the Existence of Snakes in the Human Blood Stream . His short stories have appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction , Asimov's Science Fiction, On Spec, and various anthologies . His novel The Ray Gun: A Love Story won both the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award and Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine Readers' Award in 2009 . He received the Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine Readers' Award (also known as Asimov's Reader's Poll ) again in 2016 for his short story The Mutants Men Don't See .

His novels are set in the future and have a common background. Spaceflight is controlled by an alien race that is far ahead of humanity in its evolution. Recurring topics are gender roles and ethical behavior.

Gardner's influences include John Collier , Kurt Vonnegut, and Samuel R. Delany .
