Orson Scott Card

Orson Scott Card (2008)

Orson Scott Card (born August 24, 1951 in Richland , Washington , USA) is an American writer .

Life

Card's early works come from the genres of science fiction (e.g. Hot Sleep and Capitol ) and fantasy ( Songmaster ). He became famous with the science fiction novel Das Große Spiel (Original Edition Ender's Game ), which won the Nebula Award in 1985 and the Hugo Award in 1986 . Both awards also reached the sequel Speaker for the Dead (Engl. Originalausgabe Speaker for the Dead ) in 1986 (Nebula) and 1987 (Hugo), which card made for the sole author of the consecutive two major awards of science fiction in two years won. He also received the Locus Award for Speakers for the Dead , which he should have won a total of eight times. Also in 1987, his short novel Hatrack River received the World Fantasy Award . He has also published in the areas of horror ( Lost Boys ) and thriller ( Treasure Box ).

Some of his novels (such as Stone Tables , a novel about the life of the Old Testament Moses ) are religiously colored; other novels show his Mormon tradition only indirectly or not at all.

Card is also politically active, although his stance - despite his self-assessment as a democrat - is to be assessed more as right-wing conservative. Card advocates, among other things, several aspects of the so-called war on terror and the related American foreign policy. He was also criticized several times for his statements against same-sex marriage. His Empire novels ( Empire as well as Hidden Empire ) were criticized for the fact that Card expressed his political views very explicitly and in some cases sharply polemicized against liberal positions.

Since 2008 he has been a weekly commentary for the Sunday edition of the Mormon Deseret News (formerly "the Mormon Times ").

The Ender Universe

The stories of the Ender universe revolve around the person of Ender Wiggin. Ender was born as a "genetic commissioned work" in a phase in which the people of the earth are in constant conflict with the extraterrestrial race of the Buggers (German: Krabbler). Mankind needed a military genius that dwarfed individuals like Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and Napoleon. Ender spent his childhood on a space station in a state of social isolation and constant challenge from his classmates and teachers. At the age of eleven, at the height of his intellectual capacity, he was admitted to the final exam early. The test was a highly demanding, if not unfair, simulated battle. He solved it by choosing a course of action that was to be regarded as unusual and by using a suicide mission to destroy the planet and thus the entire species of the enemy.

To his astonishment, the auditors had no objections to this: it was not a simulation at all, but the decisive battle of the real war. The real soldiers had carried out his orders and won the battle by completely annihilating the alien race. Shaken by the sudden realization that an entire race has been wiped out, Ender decides to go into anonymity in the course of the human colonization of space that is now beginning. In a book of pervasive truth that will go down in the history of mankind over time, he castigates his own deed under a pseudonym and makes mankind realize its terrible mistake. Then he embarks on a cosmic journey of penance by visiting planets that were previously inhabited by the crawlers and now by humans. Due to the consequences of the relativistic space flight, he skips the millennia, accompanied by his sister Valentine. He becomes the voice of truth for the dead by recognizing their inner world of thought from their works (a skill that, among other things, defines his military genius) and explaining them to the bereaved. In the second book, he counters his destruction of the crawlers with the resettlement of the crawler queen on a planet. Due to various circumstances, the local aliens form a new community together with the humans and the soon-to-be-emerging crawlers.

In 2008 Card received the American Library Association's Margaret A. Edwards Award for great service in youth literature. Quoted: Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow .

With the planned book Shadows Alive , the end series and the shadow series should come together again.

The first volume was 2013 with Harrison Ford filmed and was released in Germany on October 24, 2013.
