Élisabeth Ferron-Wehrlin Morché Vonarburg (born August 5, 1947 in Paris ) is a French-Canadian writer and translator of science fiction and fantasy who has received numerous awards for her work.

Life

Élisabeth Ferron-Wehrlin studied humanities at the University of Dijon , wrote a master's thesis on a science fiction topic, in 1972 she passed the state examination in modern literature and then worked for a short time as a teacher. In 1973 she emigrated to Canada and settled in Québec . In 1987 she did her doctorate in creative writing and from then on lived as a freelance writer in Chicoutimi near Saguenay .

In 1974 she began working on the science fiction magazine Requiem , which was later renamed Solaris , and from the end of 1976 she published her first stories there, initially in collaboration with her then husband Jean-Joël Vonarburg. In 1978, her story L'Oeil de la nuit won the Prix Dagon, awarded by Requiem . In 1979 she organized the first Congrès Boréal in Chicoutimi . At the Prix Boreal , which has been awarded annually in various categories at this convention , she herself has won several awards in the categories of novels, short stories and for her critical contributions. Also in 1979, she hosted the first of a series of workshops for SF writers that continued through the late 1980s and revived in 2004. Vonarburg was the editor of Solaris magazine from 1983 to 1986 . In 1987 she won the Prix Aurora for the first time for her work at Solaris and for her services to SF literature and SF fandom .

Her first novel, Le Silence de la cité , was published in 1981 , and the following year it won the two most prestigious French science fiction prizes, the Grand Prix de l'Imaginaire and the Prix Rosny aîné . In Le Silence de la cité , the protagonist Elisa is the last offspring of a decadent society of almost immortal scientists who, in a Europe of the distant future, have buried themselves in a closed underground city, while the surrounding wilderness is populated by barbaric mutants. Elisa, a product of genetic experiments endowed with special gifts and powers, leaves the city to give humanity a new beginning.

The successor volume Chroniques du Pays des Mères was awarded the Prix Aurora, the Prix Boreal and the Prix Jacques-Brossard . Both novels have been translated into German as The Silent City and The Maerlande Chronicles . Besides these two, there are only a few stories by Vonarburg that have appeared in German translation. The novels form the Maerlande cycle, which also includes a number of short stories that appeared in the collections L'œil de la nuit (1980) and Janus (1984).

The Tyranaël cycle, published from 1996 to 1997, is one of Vonarburg's main works, in which the history of two planets and two peoples over several centuries unfolds in five volumes. Reine de Mémoire , published in five volumes from 2005 to 2007, is a fantasy cycle.

From 1979 Vonarburg also appeared as a translator, starting with Up the Walls of the World by James Tiptree junior , followed by over 40 translated novels and numerous short stories, with the emphasis on fantasy authors, namely Guy Gavriel Kay , Marion Zimmer Bradley and Marie Bilodeau .
