life and career

After high school, Johnson studied Old English and Old Norse at Goldsmiths College, London University. She then taught English for a while and taught acting for a year at North London College. Fascinated by the Old Norse language, history and literature, she took a master's degree in Scandinavian Studies at University College London .

By chance Johnson got into the publishing house George Allen & Unwin , which also published J. R. R. Tolkien works. Within six months, she was promoted to publishing editor . In the 1980s and 1990s she was responsible for the publication of the fantasy classic The Lord of the Rings . George Allen & Unwin later became part of HarperCollins . During her time at the publishing house, Johnson worked with authors such as Clive Barker , Geoff Ryman , Kim Stanley Robinson , Stephen King, and Raymond Feist , George RR Martin and Arthur C. Clarke . During the filming of Peter Jackson's book adaptation Lord of the Rings , she visited the film team in New Zealand . There she worked on accompanying film books, which she published in the following years under the pseudonym Jude Fisher.

Johnson loves to travel and climb. In 2005 she flew to Morocco to do research there about a distant relative who is said to have been kidnapped by Berber pirates in 1625 and sold into slavery. The book The Tenth Gift was created from the impressions on site . After a climbing accident, she made a lifestyle. Johnson sold her apartment, closed her office in England and moved to Morocco. There she married a local who she had met before her unsuccessful climbing tour. Now she lives with her husband most of the time in a village in the Anti-Atlas , but occasionally comes back to Cornwall. Johnson continues to work as Fiction Publishing Director for HarperCollins.
