Marion Zimmer Bradley

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marion Zimmer Bradley (born June 3, 1930 in Albany , New York , † September 25, 1999 in Berkeley , California ) was an American writer who became known around the world for fantasy novels such as The Mists of Avalon . In the 1960s, for financial reasons, she also wrote dime books, horror novels, life confessions, crime novels and soft porn under various pseudonyms such as Lee Chapman , John Dexter , Miriam Gardner , Valerie Graves , Morgan Ives and John J. Wells .

Life

Marion Zimmer Bradley was born Marion Eleanor Zimmer in Albany in 1930. She started writing when she was eleven. First she tried historical novels. In 1946, she began a teacher training course at New York State College , but dropped out without a degree. In 1949 she married Robert Alden Bradley, a railroad worker thirty years her senior. In 1950 their first son, David Bradley, was born. In 1962 she separated from Robert Bradley, moved to Abilene , Texas , and continued her studies at Hardin-Simmons University , which she graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. In 1964 she divorced Bradley and a few weeks later married Walter Henry Breen , an author and numismatist who also did research on the history of homosexuality . With him she had two more children, Patrick and Moira. For professional reasons, she continued to use the Bradley name.

She then began postgraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-founded the Society for Creative Anachronism with Diana L. Paxson in 1966 . In 1979 she separated from Breen, but continued to work with him. The marriage ended in divorce in 1990. That same year, Breen was convicted of sexually abusing minors. Bradley is said to have had a sexual relationship with fantasy writer Elizabeth Waters, who made several contributions to her "sword-and-sorceress" anthologies and also acted as editor after Bradley's death.

With her sisters-in-law Diana L. Paxson and Tracy Blackstone and her brother Paul Edwin Zimmer , she lived in the Greyhaven writer's household , later in their Greenwalls home , both in Berkeley , California , until her death . On September 21, 1999, Marion Zimmer Bradley suffered a heart attack , from the consequences of which she died on September 25 of the same year. Two months later, her ashes were scattered over Glastonbury Tor in Somerset , England.

Career

At the age of 17 Bradley published a magazine for science fiction fans. From 1953 she was able to publish her first texts in fantasy and SF magazines. That year, Vortex Science Fiction magazine printed their short story Women Only . Numerous other short stories followed, some under different pseudonyms. Many of them were commissioned work, some of which she herself viewed as inferior. Their first continuous successes came with the Darkover cycle, the first novel of which The Planet Savers appeared in 1958. She also worked on periodicals and anthologies, some of which she edited herself. She achieved worldwide success and bestseller status in 1983 with the novel The Mists of Avalon , through which she became known beyond the fantasy genre. In the course of her life, Bradley wrote around 50 novellas of the science fiction / fantasy genre, and numerous anthologies of her short stories were published. She was the editor of over 20 other books in the genre, mostly anthologies. Bradley not only encouraged the creative work of fans in the form of fan fiction , but also wrote at least one story from the Middle-earth universe by the British writer JRR Tolkien ( The Jewel of Arwen ).

In addition to her work as a writer, Bradley worked, in part with Breen, on texts on historical and cultural aspects of male and female homosexuality. Together they created and maintained a bibliography of homosexual literature over the years. In the 1950s she was associated with the lesbian action group Daughters of Bilitis and contributed articles to their magazine The Ladder .

Religious views

Bradley was raised in the tradition of the Episcopal Church . She had been interested in esoteric religious beliefs from an early age . After arriving in Berkeley, she became increasingly concerned with neo-paganism , psychic perceptions and reincarnation . Along with Paxson founded Bradley 1978 a Wicca - Coven called Dark Moon Circle . In 1980 she was ordained together with Breen as priestess of the "Holy Apostolic-Catholic Church of the East (Chaldean-Syrian)". In this capacity she offered voluntary pastoral services for the LGBT organization Pacific Center For Human Growth . Bradley co-founded the Center for Nontraditional Religion, which she made available on her property. In 1997 she turned back to the Episcopal Church.

Controversy

Copyright dispute

Since the first stories of the Darkover cycle appeared, Bradley had commented on and published fan fiction anthologies in which fans - especially those from the “Friends of Darkover” circle - could publish their own stories from the cycle. In 1992 there was an argument with the author of a fan story who saw her copyrights violated by Bradley's projected new book with the working title "Contraband". In order to avoid a legal dispute, Bradley's publishing house declined to publish the book in advance. Bradley then stopped working with the Friends of Darkover fan group.

Allegations of abuse

In 2014, Bradley was accused by her daughter, Moira Greyland, of sexually abusing her between the ages of three and twelve. Greyland also describes her childhood as very violent and claims that Marion Zimmer Bradley almost killed her several times. According to Greyland, she is not the only victim, there are several other victims of both sexes. The author Jim C. Hines stated that Bradley had covered the sexual assault on children by her husband Breen, who has multiple criminal records. The Canadian LGBT magazine Xtra! reported in 2007 that Bradley had known and defended Bree's sexual relationships with minors from the start of their marriage. After his death, one of Walter Breen's victims sued Marion Zimmer Bradley for aiding and abetting in the 1990s. Bradley, for her part, tried to have the court established that she could not be held civilly responsible for the late Breen's actions. To do this, she asked for a declaration of indemnity from Breen's heirs. It is noteworthy that her own children, Patrick and Moira, were her opponents in the process. Aspects of this process have been discussed repeatedly in the American literature.

influence

Marion Zimmer Bradley is best known for her fantasy novels. The most successful are the stories from the Darkover cycle and the novel The Mists of Avalon . The latter describes the Arthurian legend from the perspective of a woman. The Mists of Avalon was filmed for television in 2000 and aired in 2001. Another very successful book by the author is The Fires of Troy , in which the Trojan War is retold from the perspective of the priestess Kassandra .

With her novels, Bradley had a great influence on feminist and neo-pagan circles.

Bradley has removed the taboo from the subject of homosexuality in American science fiction and presented it without prejudice. In the mid-1960s she wrote several novels with LGBT content under pseudonyms , which she herself described as "bread and butter" and "trash novels ".

Awards

In 1984 Zimmer Bradley received the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel for The Mists of Avalon .

In 2000, Marion Zimmer Bradley was posthumously honored with the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement for her life's work .
