Andre Norton
Andre Norton (* 17th February 1912 in Cleveland , Ohio ; † 17th March 2005 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee ; actually Alice Mary Norton ) was an American science fiction - and fantasy - author .
Norton, who wrote 130 novels and around a hundred short stories and edited numerous anthologies, was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 1997 as the first woman . For her extensive work she has been awarded the Balrog , Skylark and World Fantasy Awards , among others . She was the first woman to receive the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy Award . Norton's work is not limited to science fiction and fantasy, she also wrote mystery thrillers and western novels.
Her Witches World series, however, is a little different from most fantasy series. The main element is not a hero, but the world. It is the world of witches that connects these 20 volumes.
Life
Andre Norton attended Collingwood High School, where she wrote for the school newspaper Collingwood Spotlight , for which she maintained a separate page. At the same time she began writing her first novel, Ralestone Luck . She studied history at Flora Stone Mather College but left college after the first year because she had to support her family during the Depression . While doing various jobs, she took evening classes in journalism and English at Cleveland College. Among other things, she worked for the Library of Congress during World War II and for the children's department of the public library in Cleveland.
After her first novel, The Prince Commands , was published in 1934 , her editor suggested that she use a male pseudonym, since male authors would be more popular with the young consumers of fantasy stories. She first called herself Andrew North, before her publications later appeared under the name Andre Norton. In 1958 she decided to make writing her profession. In 1966 Norton moved to Florida, later to Tennessee, where she opened the High Hallack Author Research Library in 1999. Her last novel, Three Hands for Scorpio , was published in April 2005. Norton, who was never married, loved cats and books.
