Tanith Lee (married Tanith Lee Kaiine , * 19th September 1947 in London , † 24. May 2015 in East Sussex ) was a British science fiction - and fantasy - author .

Life

After completing school, she had several jobs and attended art college for a year until she found her calling in writing. In 1968 she published her first short story, consisting of only 90 words. In 1971 her youth novel The Dragon Hoard came out, but her breakthrough came in 1975 with The Birthgrave (In the Heart of the Volcano) , which was nominated for the Nebula Award for best novel that same year . She could not find a British publisher for this novel; finally the novel was published by the American publisher DAW.

Since 1976 Tanith Lee has devoted herself exclusively to writing. She wrote mostly fantasy novels, but with Don't Bite the Sun (1976) and Drinking Sapphire Wine (1977) she has published two extraordinary and widely acclaimed science fiction novels.

In Germany, their fantasy stories in the role-playing game Ruf des Warlock were used for a background world without a license.

She had been married to John Kaiine since 1992 and lived near Brighton, where she died on May 24, 2015 at the age of 67 of complications from breast cancer.
