John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The John W. Campbell Best New Writer Award is also called the Campbell Award .

The John Wood Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel has been presented annually since 1973 . In contrast to other important prizes in science fiction literature, such as the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award , the recipients are selected by a jury. The award was created in honor of the writer and editor John W. Campbell .

In 1976, the prize was awarded retrospectively to the 1970 novel The Year of the Quiet Sun by Wilson Tucker because the jury did not consider any of the nominated works to be worthy of a prize, although this year the works The Eternal War by Joe Haldeman (Hugo and Nebula ), Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany and Der Schockwellenreiter by John Brunner .

In 1994 the jurors could not come to an agreement, so the prize was not awarded.

The award ceremonies have taken place in different locations over the years, but since 1979 at the University of Kansas , where they are the focus of a conference on various topics related to science fiction literature.
