Uplift cycle

The idea of the uplift universe goes back to Erich von Däniken's hypothesis that the gods were extraterrestrial. The original »progenitors« must have always been intelligent, but every other potentially intelligent form of life was only "lifted" to a galactic level by a "patronage race" (increase in intelligence and possibly also physical abilities through genetic manipulation ). Humanity is an anomaly, a "wolf breed", because it has no cartridge or at least it is unknown. Hence, people also lack a basic understanding of the intricacies of galactic culture.

There is also an "uplift" addition to the role-playing game GURPS , which allows role-players to experience adventures in the universe in which these novels are set. This addition was not written by David Brin, but is based on his work.

Second foundation cycle

Another work by David Brin is his novel set in Isaac Asimov's Foundation universe. It is the third, final volume of the second Foundation cycle.

The Practice Effect / The exercise effect

The physicist Dennis Nuel arrives in a parallel world through an experiment. Although this is similar to ours, one of the laws of nature seems to be turned on its head. Objects of daily use such as furniture, clothes and weapons do not wear out, on the contrary, they have to be used ("practiced") for the intended purpose from initially rough templates, so that they fulfill this better and better!

Kiln People / Copy

Albert Morris is a private investigator. However, he leaves the more unpleasant and dangerous research to his ditos, copies of himself with a life expectancy of a maximum of 24 hours. However, when investigating his current case, one of his ditos goes into business for himself. So in the end he has to take it personally and risk his own body.

criticism

“Multibody physical problems tend to be unsolvable, and social problems are. After nine hundred and fifty pages, David Brin has brought the world spirit to life, while a scientist more accidentally became the creator of a new universe. Apparently it couldn't be any smaller. Mother Earth itself is networked with the global network and, wise Gaia, takes over the regime, a pleasure for all people (well, most of them). And once again an otherwise respectable and competently written SF novel, which is firmly established on the boards of the scientific worldview, ultimately saves itself in the spiritual, defuses its own questions and lays the ax of transcendence to its own roots. If the world spirit takes over anyway, we can continue to muddle. Worrying fact: Authors who perceive the misery of this world with wide open eyes can only save themselves to a dubious happy ending with the help of a mythical world mother Gaia. "
