Gregory Benford

Gregory Albert Benford (born January 30, 1941 in Mobile , Alabama ) is an American science fiction author and physicist who teaches at the University of California at Irvine .

Life

After Benford had spent the first eight years of his life on a farm with his grandmother, he followed in his father's footsteps as the son of a career officer and got to know Japan, Mexico and Germany, among others. In 1957 he returned to the USA, completed his university entrance qualification and then studied physics at the University of California, San Diego . Received his PhD in 1967, he spent four years at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory and became Assistant Professor at Irvine University in 1971 and Full Professor in San Diego in 1979. He published numerous scientific articles (including on relativistic plasma physics , astrophysics ) and was visiting professor at Cambridge for a year . He published his first SF story in 1965, and he has been writing ever since, in order to have a balance alongside his academic work. In 1989, Benford was the author and presenter of a popular science eight-part television series called A Galactic Odyssey , in which the viewpoints of modern physics and astronomy on the evolution of the galaxy were presented (produced by the Japanese state television NHK ).

In 2004 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .

Works

Benford has a twin brother, Jim Benford, with whom he has worked on a number of science fiction stories and projects. Both started out in science fiction fandom. Gregory Benford was also co-editor of the fanzine "Void".

His first sold story, Stand-In, appeared in the June 1965 issue of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. In 1969 he began writing a regular column in Amazing Stories.

Benford primarily writes “hard science fiction”, in which he also processes the research he does as a practicing scientist. He has worked with a variety of authors, including William Rotsler , David Brin, and Gordon Eklund . He became known with the "Contact Cycle", a series of related novels that began with "In the Sea of the Night". This series portrays the Milky Way as a galaxy in which intelligent life has been at war with intelligent machines for ages.

He achieved his breakthrough in 1980 with the time travel classic "Timescape", which won the Nebula Award and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award . The novel eventually gave its name to a science fiction series that was later published by Pocket Books.

Benford has also edited several anthologies of alternative world stories, as well as collections of Hugo winners. In the 1990s he wrote Foundation's Fear, a novel from an authorized sequel trilogy to Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy - the other two books were written by David Brin and Greg Bear . Other novels published in the 1990s include the near-future science fiction thrillers "Cosm" (1998), "The Martian Race" (1999) and "Eater" (2000).

Benford has been nominated for four Hugo Awards (two short stories, two novels) and 12 Nebula Awards (in all categories). He won another nebula for the story "If the Stars Are Gods" (with Gordon Eklund).
