Janet Ellen Morris (born May 25, 1946 in Boston , Massachusetts ) is an American science fiction and fantasy writer.

Life

Morris studied at New York University from 1965 to 1966 . In 1971 she married the writer and musician Christopher C. Morris . In the mid-1970s she played bass guitar in her husband's band. From the end of the 1980s she was engaged in various functions with the evaluation and propagation of non-lethal weapons . In particular, she was a project manager at the US Global Strategy Council in 1989 and, from 1990, head of research in the area of non-lethal programs at the Institute for Geopolitical Studies . She wrote several non-fiction books on strategy and non-lethal weapons, including The Warrior's Edge in 1990 with John B. Alexander and Richard Groller . In 1995 she and her husband founded M2 Technologies in Stafford , Virginia , which offers various services and advice in connection with the use of non-lethal and other weapon systems. Morris is the managing director of M2 Technologies .

Published in 1977 Morris their first SF novel, high bed of Silistra , the first volume of Silistra - tetralogy . Estri Hadrath, guardian of Astria's well, is faced with the task of finding the man who fathered her with her mother, the chief courtesan . Silistra is a planet destroyed by an apocalyptic war long ago, on which the consequences of the war still weigh on the inhabitants, including through reduced fertility. The "fountains" were originally intended to counteract sterility, but have become brothels, praised far beyond the planet Silistra, matrilineally ruled by the chief courtesans, the "high companions". Here and in subsequent novels, Morris describes a complex society, often borrowing from history.

The use of historical material is even more pronounced in Morris's second cycle, in which artificially conscious spaceships form the power base of the Kerrions, a powerful family of interstellar traders. Morris again describes a complex world in which the 16-year-old Shebat tries to find her way around and which in many ways reflects the world of Hellenism . In addition, as in the Silistra tetralogy, paranormal abilities play a not insignificant role.

The next cycle, The Sacred Band of Stepsons , was a side branch opened by Morris in Robert Lynn Asprins Thieves' World Fantasy Universe , to which she contributed a series of short stories and seven novels from 1980, consisting of the Beyond trilogy (1985 / 1986) and the Tempus tetralogy (1987–1990), with her husband Chris Morris co-authoring several times.

At the same time, Morris began the Heroes in Hell series together with CJ Cherryh , the volumes of which are largely anthologies with stories from several authors - in the first volume, for example, alongside Morris and Cherryh, Chris Morris, Gregory Benford and David Drake - in which various historical figures such as Julius Caesar , Alexander and Macchiavelli in hell continue with their power struggles and intrigues exactly where death left them off. There is a volume for each of the various groups of people (heroes, kings, pirates, lawyers, poets, etc.). By 2017, 20 volumes had appeared in the series, of which Morris was involved as an author.

Morris also wrote a number of individual novels in the 1980s, mostly in collaboration . These are often techno thrillers set in the near future with a secret agent as the protagonist. This subheading includes The 40-Minute War (1984), Active Measures (1985) and Medusa (1986).

In addition to science fiction, Morris has also written several other novels. Mention should be made here of I, the Sun (1980), a historical novel about the Hittite king Šuppiluliuma I.
