Robert Asprin (1993)

Robert Lynn Asprin (born June 28, 1946 in St. Johns , Michigan , † May 22, 2008 in New Orleans ) was an American writer .

Life

Asprin was the first American-born child to immigrants from Ireland and the Philippines. He grew up in Ann Arbor and studied at the University of Michigan . Asprin served in the US Army and from 1967 worked as an accountant in a Xerox branch. In 1978 he decided to make writing his main occupation.

At this point he had made his first SF novel The Cold Cash War (1977) and Another Fine Myth (1978), the start of a successful humorous fantasy series. Asprin wrote in the 1980s with the "MYTH series" (in the German translation "demon series") several bestsellers, which ironically dealt with the usual hero stories in other fantasy epics. The main character of the Myth series is the magician Skeeve, who - contrary to ordinary fantasy - proves to be anything but competent and repeatedly relies on the help of the demon Aahz.

Together with his wife at the time, Lynn Abbey , Asprin also designed the “Thief World Series”. This is a shared world series in which different authors tell stories in one and the same fantasy world. Asprin has published this anthology series. Prominent co-authors include Poul Anderson , CJ Cherryh , Marion Zimmer Bradley , Janet Morris and AE van Vogt .

Asprin later wrote a series of six ironic science fiction novels under the umbrella term "Chaos Company" (in the original Phule's Series , partly with Peter Heck as co-author).

Asprin suffered from writer's block , sometimes lasting several years , which were mostly only interrupted by books in which he appeared at best as a co-author, but probably contributed little to the content. In particular, the widespread speculation about the causes of this writer's block - contracts with a publisher that went bankrupt, problems with the US tax authorities, or severe psychological problems - repeatedly fueled the discussion about possible new books.

Asprin was married twice and had two children. He lived in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana until his death .
