Gene Wolfe

Gene Wolfe (2005)

Gene Wolfe (* 7. May 1931 in Brooklyn ; † 14. April 2019 ) was an American science fiction - and fantasy - author .

Gene Wolfe is known for his dense and allusive prose trained by Vladimir Nabokov and Jorge Luis Borges . His cycle of novels, The Fifth Head of Cerberus, and his four-volume science fantasy epic The Book of the New Sun about the torturer Severian are classics of the genre. In addition to many other important prizes, he was awarded the Nebula Award twice , the Locus Award six times and the World Fantasy Award three times (most recently in 2007 for his novel Soldier of Sidon ) - in 1996 he received the World Fantasy Award for his life's work.

Life

Wolfe studied mechanical engineering at Texas A&M University and served as a soldier in the US Army in the Korean War . Before he could devote himself full-time to writing, he was employed for many years as editor of the industry magazine Plant Engineering . As an engineer Wolfe to the press machine for Pringles - potato chips have been developed. Wolfe last lived with his wife in a suburb of Chicago .

His most famous work is the wolf The Book of the New Sun . The plot is set in a dark future and has similarities to Jack Vance's Dying Earth series, whose influence on his work Wolfe himself has confirmed. The plot tells in detail the life story of Severian, an apprentice from the guild of torturers. He was expelled from his guild for having shown compassion for Thecla, one of his torture victims ("clients"). Severian's story is told from a first-person perspective in four books ( The Shadow of the Torturer (1980), The Claw of the Conciliator (1981), The Sword of the Lictor (1982), and The Citadel of the Autarch (1983 )). The book The Urth of the New Sun (1987) completes some of the open plot threads of the story, but is generally viewed as a work on its own. In the 1990s, Wolfe brought out two more book series that are set in the same universe. The first, The Book of the Long Sun, consists of the parts Nightside the Long Sun (1993), Lake of the Long Sun (1994), Caldé of the Long Sun (1994), and Exodus From the Long Sun (1996). These stories are about the priest of a small community who is embroiled in political intrigue and revolutionary machinations in a city-state. Wolfe wrote another sequel "book," The Book of the Short Sun , which consists of the parts On Blue's Waters (1999), In Green's Jungles (2000) and Return to the Whorl (2001). Colonists have reached the sister planets "Blue" and "Green". All three “books” or series of books are sometimes also summarized under the English term “Solar Cycle”.

Wolfe has also written many self-contained books. Its first story, Operation Ares, was a failure. He then wrote Peace and The Fifth Head of Cerberus , both of which are widely appreciated by critics. Peace is a long story by Alden Dennis Weer, a man of many secrets who looks back on his life under mysterious circumstances. The Fifth Head of Cerberus is a collection of three short stories dealing with colonization, memory and the nature of identity awareness. The first story after which the book bears its title was nominated for the Nebula Award for best narrative.

Often an unreliable narrator speaks in Wolfe's texts : “Real people are actually always unreliable narrators, even when they try to be reliable narrators” (Wolfe in an interview with Lawrence Person, freely translated). Sometimes the narrator is someone who is just naive ( Pandora by Holly Hollander , The Knight ), not particularly intelligent (There Are Doors) , or not always honest (The Book of the New Sun) , or has a serious illness like Latro in Soldier of the Mist (loses his memories after 24 hours). Some readers find Wolfe's unreliable narrator confusing because, if the reader cannot trust the narrator, there is no way of clearly defining the meaning of the text. One can also see the unreliable narrator as an intended opportunity or challenge. Although this stylistic device requires more thinking from the reader, it opens up a broader and deeper space for the interpretation of the stories.
