Douglas A. Anderson

Douglas Allen Anderson (* 1959 ) is an American literary scholar and bookseller. His specialty is fantasy literature, and he has made a particular contribution to the edition philology of fantastic works.

Anderson initially worked as a bookseller in Ithaca , New York, then in northern Indiana . In 1988 his first book The Annotated Hobbit was published , a text-critical and annotated edition of JRR Tolkien's famous children's book The Hobbit . Since the publication of The Annotated Hobbit , for which he received the Mythopoeic Award , Anderson has been recognized as the world's greatest expert on the textual transmission of the Hobbit .

The revised American edition by Houghton Mifflin from 2002 is based on Anderson's critical text studies on the Lord of the Rings , in which various changes by Tolkien to British editions are also included. Anderson also contributed a Note on the Text discussing the history of these changes.

Anderson is editor of the journal Tolkien Studies : An Annual Scholarly Review with Verlyn Flieger and Michael DC Drout (previously Volumes 1–7, 2004–2010).

Anderson also published modern editions of other fantasy writers such as B. by Kenneth Morris and William Hope Hodgson .
