Edition science
The editorial theory and philology is usually as a branch of literary studies or musicology treated.
It sifts through and opens up literary and historical sources that form the basis of research in the humanities . Depending on the object being worked on, knowledge of the historical auxiliary sciences is often necessary, in particular methods of textual criticism , which is usually understood as a sub-area of edition philology.
In the meantime, university master’s courses have become established that have specialized in the needs of edition philology, including palaeography , typography , layout and media law, for example at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and the University of Bern . The Free University of Berlin and the University of Heidelberg also had modules for this in their curriculum.
