Verlyn aviator
Verlyn Flieger (born February 24, 1933 ) is an author , editor and professor in the Department of English at the University of Maryland in College Park . She is a specialist in comparative mythology and modern fantasy , especially the works of JRR Tolkien .
Life
Flieger graduated from George Washington University with a degree in English literature , which she graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1955. She completed her Master of Arts in 1972 at the Catholic University of America , where she also obtained her Doctor of Philosophy ( Ph.D. ) in 1977 . She worked at the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute from 1965 to 1966, as a research assistant for English at the Catholic University from 1971 to 1976, and from 1976 to 2012 in various areas of responsibility at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Her best-known books are Splintered Light: Logos and Language in Tolkien's World (1983); A Question of Time: JRR Tolkien's Road to Faerie , for which she received the 1998 Mythopoeic Award for Studies of the Inklings , and Interrupted Music: The Making of Tolkien's Mythology (2005).
She won the Mythopoeic Award for Studies of the Inklings again in 2002 for Tolkien's Legendarium: Essays on The History of Middle-earth , a book she co- edited with Carl Hostetter and a third time in 2013 for Green Suns and Faërie: Essays on JRR Tolkien . She received several awards for her excellent teaching skills as a university teacher.
Flieger also wrote fantasy for young adults, the book Pig Tale , and short stories. She is the editor of the journal Tolkien Studies : An Annual Scholarly Review with Douglas A. Anderson and Michael DC Drout .
