Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Company (formerly: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company ) is one of the leading educational publishers in the United States, based in Boston , Massachusetts . It was founded in 1832 by Henry Oscar Houghton and George Mifflin (as Houghton Mifflin) and today employs around 4,500 people.
In 2007 they took over Harcourt and added Harcourt to the company.
criticism
In November 2007, the publisher came under severe criticism due to its enormous complicity in a number of calculation and printing errors in elementary school textbooks (most of which had been sold in Texas ). An investigation by the school authorities uncovered 109,283 errors, of which 86,026 errors (approx. 79%) were at the expense of the publisher. As a result, the publisher was charged a contractual penalty, which was set at 5000 euros for every calculation or printing error that was not eliminated by February 2008 . It is not known whether the time window could be kept. Since in the past all errors could mostly be corrected in time in similar cases, this can be assumed.
