Helene Wecker

Helene Alarm Clock (born in Libertyville , Illinois ) is an American writer and author of, among others, for the Nebula Award nominee and with the Mythopoeic Award winning Fantasy -Romans Golem and jinn .

Life

Wecker grew up in Libertyville, a small town north of Chicago , where she also attended high school . She studied English at Carleton College in Northfield , Minnesota , where she graduated with a bachelor's degree. After several years working in advertising and public relations in Minneapolis and Seattle , she began studying creative writing at Columbia University in New York , where she graduated with a Masters in 2007. She lives near San Francisco with her husband and daughter .

Golem and Djinn

Her first novel The Golem and the Jinni (German as Golem and Dschinn ) was published by HarperCollins in 2013 . It was nominated for numerous awards in 2014, including the Nebula Award, World Fantasy Award , James Tiptree, Jr. Award , Locus Award , William L. Crawford Fantasy Award and the Goodreads Choice Award , and won the Mythopoeic Award for best novel. In addition to a translation into German, the novel was translated into French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish and Turkish. A sequel under the title The Iron Season will appear in 2018.

The two title characters, the golem woman Chava and the jinn Ahmad, find themselves stranded in New York in 1899. Chava, after her master, a dubious rabbi and Kabbalist , died on the sea voyage from Poland to America, Ahmed, after he was accidentally freed from the old copper bottle in which he was trapped for centuries. The two magical creatures, the woman made of clay and the man made of fire, become unequal friends and try to find their way around the strange city together, always striving to hide their true nature from the environment and to control the destructive impulses caused by their nature hold.
