Mary Stewart (born September 12, 1916 in Sunderland , Northern England , as Mary Florence Elinor Rainbow , † May 9, 2014 at Loch Awe , Scotland ) was a British writer.

Life

Stewart began writing when she was five when she published her first poem in a small local parish journal. After receiving her Masters of Arts degree from Durham University , she taught English there until 1945 when she married Sir Frederick Stewart, a member of the Royal Society .

Ten years later she published her first novel “Madam, Will You Talk?” And since then she has written over 20 novels for adults as well as radio plays and children's books . Some of their stories have been filmed for cinema and television .

She won the Crime Writers Association Silver Dagger in 1961 for "My Brother Michael" . The book is set in old Delphi and was her first novel to be set in Greece , written after many visits to this country. About the book, Mary Stewart said: "'My Brother Michael' was my love affair with Greece."

Her novels became global bestsellers and are an interesting mixture of romance, mystery and suspense. Stewart uses her literary and historical knowledge with great skill and success.

Three of her most famous books, "The Crystal Cave" (1970 "Flammender Kristall", Munich 1989), "The Hollow Hills" (1973, "Der Erbe", Munich 1989) and "The Last Enchantment" (1979, "Merlins Abschied", Munich 1989), deal with the legendary world around King Arthur and the magician Merlin , a world that is also thematized in "The Prince and the Pilgrim".

Their stories are often set in France , Great Britain, Greece (" The Moonspinners ") and also Austria and are always carefully researched and described.

In 1971 she received the Frederick Niven prize for "The Crystal Cave" from the International PEN Association and in 1974 she received the Scottish Arts Council Award for the children's novel "Ludo and the Star Horse". In 1996 her life's work was honored with the Agatha Award .

Born in England, she lived in Scotland for many years , commuting between Edinburgh and the West Highlands . Her hobbies included a. Natural history, gardening, Greek and Roman history, music, and art in general.
