Susanna Clarke

Susanna Mary Clarke (born November 1, 1959 in Nottingham ) is a British writer . She achieved fame with her fantastic novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell .

Life

Clarke was born in Nottingham in 1959, the eldest daughter of a Methodist pastor. She moved frequently during her childhood and lived in various cities in Northern England and Scotland .

Later she studied at St Hilda's College of Oxford University . After graduating, she worked for a number of non-fiction publishers for some time. In 1990 she worked as an English teacher at Fiat in Turin for a year . In 1991 she went to Bilbao (Spain) to teach English .

In 1992 Clarke returned to Great Britain and between 1993 and 2003 he was editing the cookbooks division of the Simon & Schuster publishing house in Cambridge . Before her novel, she already published a few short stories. She currently lives in Cambridge with her significant other, the writer Colin Greenland .
