Barry Hughart

Barry Hughart (born March 13, 1934 in Peoria , Illinois - † August 1, 2019 ) was an American fantasy author .

Life

Hughart studied English and gained deep impressions of the culture and literature of China during his service with the United States Air Force in the Far East , which he incorporated into his Meister Li trilogy. He lived in Tucson , Arizona .

Master Li detective novels were set in "an ancient China that never existed". Main characters of the three novels were Li Kao, a sage with small defects of character, and his loyal assistant Lu Yu, known as number ten, the ox.

His novel Bridge of Birds (German: The Bridge of Birds) was awarded the World Fantasy Award in 1985. A year later, the novel received the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award .
