Pelelu Tepu is a place in Suriname in the Sipaliwini district .

Location, residents

The place - also called Tepu for short - is located on the Tapanahony , has around 390 inhabitants and is mainly inhabited by Tiriyos's (also: Trio), Wayana's and Akurio's. The village is managed by the head of the trio. In their language , Pelelu Tepu means: frog on the rock.

Tepu is located in a nature area with impressive rapids and is surrounded by rich flora and fauna.

history

Tepu was founded by missionaries in the early 1960s. This served to facilitate their work among the nomadic locals living in the area and gave them permanent residence.

power supply

Since July 2018, the place has a photovoltaic system with 75 solar panels . The project was carried out by Amazon Conservation Team Suriname (ACT) in partnership with Japan-Caribbean Climate Change Partnership and supported by the Ministry of Natuurlijke Hulpbronnen (German: Natural Resources). The system has a total output of 20 kWh . This supplies around 88 households in Tepu with electricity.

Infrastructure

There is a small airfield very close to the village, which is run by the Mission Aviation Fellowship , including a health center run by the Medische Zending .

The village also has a primary school and visitors can rent a tourist lodge .
