Mary Doria Russell (born August 19, 1950 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American writer of science fiction and historical novels.

life and work

Mary Doria Russell grew up in the Chicago suburb of Elmhurst as the daughter of a naval nurse and a drill sergeant in the Marines . She studied at the University of Illinois and Northeastern University, and received her PhD in anthropology from the University of Michigan in 1983 . She then received a research fellowship at Case Western Reserve University , which she had to drop out because of job cuts. She worked for several years as a technical writer for instructions for use. When the commissions failed to materialize, at the age of 45 she started her first novel, The Sparrow (Eng. "Sperling"). The novel became a great success. It has been translated into twelve languages ​​and has received numerous prizes, including the Kurd-Laßwitz Prize . The sequel Children of God was also a bestseller. Since then, she has published four historical novels that have not yet been translated into German: A Thread of Grace (2005) and Dreamers of the Day (2008) deal with events from the history of the 20th century, the related novels Doc (2011 ) and Epitaph (2016) tell the story of Doc Holliday and Wyatt Earp .
