Theodore Sturgeon

Theodore Sturgeon (born February 26, 1918 in New York City as Edward Hamilton Waldo , † May 8, 1985 in Eugene , Oregon ) was an American author of psychological science fiction , fantasy and horror literature .

Life

Sturgeon's parents, named Waldo, divorced in 1927. His mother Christine married William Sturgeon in 1929. It was then that Edward changed his name to Theodore Hamilton Sturgeon because it better suited his nickname “Ted”. His plans to become a circus performer were thwarted by a rheumatic fever that had resulted in an enlarged heart. His professional life was unsteady: at the age of seventeen he went to the merchant navy and went to sea, later he sold refrigerators, drove bulldozers, worked as a hotel manager and ran a gas station before writing advertising texts. In later years he ran a literary agency in addition to writing.

He sold his first short story in 1938 to McClure's newspaper syndicate , which acquired large parts of Sturgeon's (non-fantastic) early work. His first genre work appeared a year later. Initially he mainly wrote short stories, primarily for science fiction magazines such as Astounding Science Fiction and Unknown , but also for other popular magazines such as Argosy Magazine . When two of his stories appeared in the same issue of Astounding , he used the pseudonym "E. Waldo Hunter ".

The authors Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, who are very well known for their hard science fiction, also published in Astounding Science Fiction . However, Sturgeon wrote less about technical and more about psychological and social subjects. For him, the focus was on people as early as the 1940s, which at the time was rather untypical for the science fiction genre . It was only in the following decades that authors increasingly took up social issues.

Many of Sturgeon's works are poetic , even elegiac, in character. He was known to use a technique of "rhythmic prose" in which he let his prose text fall into a meter . This can produce a subtle change in mood, the cause of which the reader is usually not aware of.

His strength lay mainly in short stories and novels; also the novel The First of their Kind (English More Than Human ) emerged from three stories. This won the International Fantasy Award in 1954 and has been reissued several times to this day. In this novel, a group of children comes together, each of which has a physical or mental disability. Together they form a new human form of existence, the Homo Gestalt , and have paranormal abilities. A great success in the 1940s was the novella Der kleine Gott / Der Gott des Mikrokosmos ( Microcosmic God ), which was published by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1973 in their SF Hall of Fame ( anthology by Ben Bova ) on the fourth place was chosen. Theodore Sturgeon died of pulmonary fibrosis on May 8, 1985 .

It was only after his death that he began to publish a complete edition of his short stories and novels, which Sturgeon had never been able to include in his books, although over the years he had put together many volumes of out-of-print stories. Sturgeon wrote the Ellery Queen novel The Player on the Other Side (Random House, 1963) as a ghostwriter . In the following years he wrote the scripts for the spaceship Enterprise episodes Shore Leave (1966) and Amok Time (1967). The latter is known for the introduction of the pon farr , the volcanic mating ritual . Sturgeon also wrote several drafts that were never produced, particularly The Joy Machine , which was later expanded into a novel by James Gunn . He also wrote an episode of the In Land of the Saurian adventure series , The Pylon Express, in 1975 .

Sturgeon is not well known to the general public and has received relatively few awards, although he is well known among readers of classical science fiction anthologies, being the living author most frequently featured in anthologies at the height of his popularity in the 1950s was. He is also very much appreciated by critics. John Clute writes in the Science Fiction Encyclopedia : "His impact on writers such as Harlan Ellison and Samuel R. Delany was profound, and in his life and work he represented a powerful and generally liberating influence in the US SF after World War II." . Contributing to Sturgeon's relatively low popularity is that what is believed to be his best was published before the genre's premier awards were introduced, while his later work was sparse and of inferior quality. Ray Bradbury and Kurt Vonnegut named Sturgeon as a major influence. Kurt Vonnegut explained that his character Kilgore Trout (Trout = English trout ) was based on Theodore Sturgeon (Sturgeon = English sturgeon ).

The saying is quoted as Sturgeon's law : "Nothing is always absolutely the way it is."

Two of Sturgeon's short stories were adapted for the television series The New Twilight Zone . One of them, A Saucer of Loneliness (1986), was dedicated to his memory.

The Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Short Story of the Year was launched in 1987 by James Gunn , Director of the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas , and the heirs of Theodore Sturgeon to one of the greatest SF short story writers.
