Anthony Boucher

Anthony Boucher (ˈbaʊtʃər), actually William Anthony Parker White , (born August 21, 1911 in Oakland, California , † April 29, 1968 ibid) was an American science fiction and mystery author.

Life

Boucher attended the University of Southern California and later studied at the University of California at Berkeley; 1932 BA , 1934 MA in German. He abandoned his goal of becoming a language teacher / translator and worked as a journalist and literary critic after the Second World War .

Anthony Boucher died of lung cancer eight days before his 57th birthday .

Works

On March 26, 1945, Boucher founded the literary association Mystery Writers of America (MWA) together with Clayton Rawson , Lawrence Treat and Brett Halliday . From 1951 until his death in 1968 he wrote the weekly column "Criminals at Large" in the New York Book Review , making it the most cited detective novel critic.

Boucher became known for his detective novels and as the first English-language translator by Jorge Luis Borges . He was one of the authors of the successful radio drama series The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes , which, with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as speakers, recounted the experiences of the detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his partner Dr. Watson continue to span.

Together with J. Francis McComas he founded the science fiction magazine The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction in 1949 and served as its editor until 1958. His aim was to use the magazine to promote the literary quality of science fiction. For this he received the Hugo Award for the best professional magazine in 1957 and 1958 . He has been writing science fiction stories since 1941, including his best-known The Quest for Saint Aquin (German: In the footsteps of St. Aquin ) in 1951 .
