Georg Kahn-Ackermann

Georg Kahn-Ackermann (born January 4, 1918 in Charlottenburg ; † September 6, 2008 in Ammerland ) was a German journalist and politician of the SPD . He was Secretary General of the Council of Europe from 1974 to 1979 .

Kahn-Ackermann was from 1953 to 1957, then from January 10, 1962, when he moved up for his party friend Wilhelm Hoegner , until the end of the 5th electoral term in 1969, and most recently from December 28, 1970, for the late MP Hermann Haage , Member of the German Bundestag until September 18, 1974 .

Kahn-Ackermann was also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe , as its Vice-President from 1973 to October 16, 1974. From 1967 to 1969 and 1973/74 he was also chairman of the committee for culture and education. Furthermore, Kahn-Ackermann was a member of the assembly of the WEU , 1966 to 1970 its vice-president and 1972 to 1973 also of the local "Political Committee".

Public offices

Kahn-Ackermann was elected on October 17, 1974 at a suggestion by Willy Brandt as the first German Secretary General of the Council of Europe. He held this position for 5 years until September 17, 1979. During his tenure, Kahn-Ackermann asserted the consultative status of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), whereby he contributed to the participation of these associations.

For many years he was also committed to the rights of authors. He not only co-founded the Bavarian Association of Journalists, but in 1958 also the collecting society Wort , of which he was honorary president. As a member of the Bundestag, he played a key role in shaping the Copyright Act of 1965.
