Ellen Klages (* 9. July 1954 in Columbus , Ohio ) is an American author of historical and science fiction - novels , in San Francisco lives. She has been nominated for the Hugo , Nebula and Campbell Awards several times. Her first non-science fiction novel, The Green Glass Sea , was published by Viking Children's Books in 2006 and won the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction in 2007 .

Portable Childhoods , a collection of her shorter works, was a finalist at the 2008 World Fantasy Awards . Her short story Singing on a Star was also nominated for a 2010 World Fantasy Award.

biography

Ellen Janeway Klages was born on July 9, 1954 in Columbus, Ohio and now lives in San Francisco. She has a degree in philosophy from the University of Michigan . In 1992 she started working for the San Francisco Exploratorium . She co-wrote a science activity book for children with Pat Murphy . Murphy encouraged Klages to write his own works as well. Her first novella, Time Gypsy , was published in 1999 and was a finalist in both the Nebula and Hugo Awards. In addition to her work as a writer, she attended the Clarion South Writers' Workshop and was on the organizing committee of the James Tiptree, Jr. Awards for 20 years . Klages is known for being an auctioneer for stand-up comedy and other performances at WisCon every year . The WisCon Tiptree auction is a fundraiser for the James Tiptree, Jr. Award. At Tiptree auctions, she auctioned her own hair, a Mary Doria Russell bra, a hand-knitted uterus, a kangaroo scrotum wallet and a cherry pie. In 2009 Klages was the guest of honor at the 33rd WisCon.
