Daryl Jon Gregory (born June 26, 1965 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American science fiction and comic book author. In 1988 Gregory completed the Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop at Michigan State University , and in 2009 he won the Crawford Award for his novel Pandemonium .

Life

Daryl Gregory was born in Chicago , Illinois , where he grew up with his two sisters. In 1987 he graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in English and Drama . In the same year he married Kathleen Bieschke. After graduating, he taught at a high school in Michigan for three years before moving to Salt Lake City , where Bieschke got a position at the University of Utah . After Bieschke was hired by Penn State , the couple moved to State College , where Gregory worked for Minitab . Gregory has two children. In 2016 he moved to Oakland , California .

Career

Gregory sold his first short story, In the Wheels , to Fantasy and Science Fiction magazine in 1990 . His first novel, Pandemonium , was published by Del Ray Books in 2008 and won the Crawford Award for Best Fantasy Debut in 2009. Pandemonium was also nominated for the World Fantasy Award , the Mythopoeic Awards, and the Shirley Jackson Award . His second novel, The Devil's Alphabet , was published by Del Rey in 2009 and was nominated for a Philip K. Dick Award in 2010 . In 2011, Del Ray published his third novel, Raising Stony Mayhall , which was named one of the best science fiction novels of the year by the Library Journal. In the same year, his collection of short stories, Unpossible and Other Stories, was published by Fairwood Press.

In 2010, Boom! Studios hired to co- write with Kurt Busiek Dracula: Company of Monsters . From August 2011 he co-wrote a “Planet of the Apes” comic for the film, which was published in German in 2014 under the title Planet of the Apes Comic Band: The Chronicles of Mak on Cross Cult . IDW hired Gregory to write The Secret Battles of Genghis Khan , a completed graphic novel that was published in March 2013.

In 2014 his science fiction novel Afterparty was published by Tor Books in the USA and Titan Books in Great Britain, and in January 2017 the novel was published in German by Fischer Tor under the same title. His novella We Are All Completely Fine was published by Tachyon Publications in August 2014, was a finalist at the Nebula Award and won the 2015 World Fantasy Award for best novel. His teenage horror novel Harrison Squared was published by Tor Books in March 2015, with further sequels planned for 2016 and 2017.
