IAFA Award

The IAFA Awards are a group of American literary-academic awards. The main prize of the Distinguished Scholarship has been awarded since 1986 for outstanding literary or critical work in the field of science fiction . The awards ceremony takes place at the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts (ICFA), the annual March conference of the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts (IAFA) in Orlando , Florida .

In addition to the Distinguished Scholarship , the following prizes are awarded:

  • David G. Hartwell Emerging Scholar Award
  • Jamie Bishop Memorial Award
  • Walter James Miller Memorial Award

In addition, along with the other awards, the IAFA and Dell Magazines jointly sponsored Dell Magazines Award for Undergraduate Excellence in Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing . The Lord Ruthven Award , a prize for literary or scientific work on vampires , is also presented at the annual ICFA .

Distinguished Scholarship Award

William L. Crawford Fantasy Award

The Crawford Fantasy Award honors the memory of publisher and editor William L. Crawford . It has been awarded since 1985 to young authors whose first fantasy novel was published in the previous year. Andre Norton , who died in 2005, played a key role in the introduction and award of the prize for many years.

Robert A. Collins Service Award

The prize is named after the founder of the conference, Robert A. Collins , who was also the first prize winner. It has been awarded irregularly since 1985 to IAFA officials who have rendered outstanding services to the organization.

Stephen R. Donaldson Award

David G. Hartwell Emerging Scholar Award

The prize has been awarded annually since 1987 for the best student work presented at the conference and is endowed with $ 250. Originally the Graduate Student Award , renamed in 2016 in memory of SF and fantasy editor David G. Hartwell who passed away that year .

Jamie Bishop Memorial Award

The Jamie Bishop Memorial Award for an Essay Not in English has been presented since 2007 for a scientific work on a topic of fantasy that is not published in English for the first time . It honors the memory of Christopher James ("Jamie") Bishop, son of science fiction writer Michael Bishop, who was murdered in the 2007 Virginia Tech rampage .

The Walter James Miller Memorial Award for Student Scholarship in the International Fantastic has been presented since 2017 for a student work on a topic of fantasy that is not published in English for the first time . It honors the memory of the author and Jules Verne editor Walter James Miller, who died in 2010 .
