Jasper Fforde (born January 11, 1961 in London ) is a British writer and cameraman .

Life

Fforde is a full-time camera assistant (including for the James Bond film GoldenEye and the movie The Saint - The Man Without a Name ).

In 2001 he published his first novel The Eyre Affair (German: The Case of Jane Eyre ) about the protagonist Thursday Next, which rose to the English bestseller lists. The Thursday Next series was continued with six more volumes until 2012. The novels are set in a fictional parallel world in which reality and fantasy mix.

In 2005 Fforde began a new series of novels about the Nursery Crime Division. The first volume, The Big Over Easy, is based on Forde's first previously unpublished manuscript, which was rejected by 76 publishers. The protagonist of the series is Detective Inspector Jack Spratt, a supporting character from the Thursday Next novel In the Well of Manuscripts . The action takes place in a fictional version of the English town of Reading , in which characters from spoken rhymes and fairy tales also live. In the summer of 2006, The Fourth Bear , the second novel in the Nursery Crimes series, was published.

In 2009, Fforde created Shades of Gray 1: The Road to High Saffron, a new, three-volume world of novels in which democracy in the distant future has been replaced by a “Colourtocracy”. In a world of more or less color blind people, the ability to recognize colors determines social status.

In 2010 he wrote his first children's book entitled The Last Dragonslayer , which is also set in an England that has medieval elements. The second volume, The Song of the Quarkbeast , was released in 2011.

The books belong to the genre of alternative world stories and contain elements of crime fiction , fantasy and comedy . They are characterized by their intertextuality , word games and a non-linear course of action.

Fforde offers version updates of its books on its website and a forum in which fans can publish self-written stories or parodies of the Thursday Next series .

Jasper Fforde is related by marriage to the British writer Katie Fforde : his cousin Desmond Fforde is her husband.
