Martha Wells (* 1. September 1964 in Fort Worth , Texas ) is an American fantasy - and science fiction - writer . She has published fantasy novels, youth literature, film and TV tie-ins , short stories and essays on fantasy and science fiction. Her novels have been translated into eight languages.

Life

Martha Wells was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1964 and received a BA in Anthropology from Texas A&M University . She lives in College Station, Texas with her husband.

Career

Wells was involved in their student days in SF / F fandom, including as chairman of AggieCon 17. She participated in numerous local writing workshops (writing workshops) and Conventions in part, about the Turkey City Writer's Workshop by Bruce Sterling . She later taught at writing workshops such as ArmadilloCon, WorldCon , ApolloCon and Writespace Houston, and was a special workshop guest at FenCon 2018.

As toastmaster of the World Fantasy Convention 2017 she spoke under the title "Unbury the Future" (Eng .: "Bringing the future to light") about marginalized creatives in the history of science fiction and fantasy, film and other media, as well the conscious suppression of the existence of these creatives.

Wells was the main author and head of the writing team for the 2018 Dominaria expansion of the card game Magic: the Gathering .

Wells' works are known for their complex and realistically detailed societies; this is often attributed to their academic background in anthropology . Her first novel The Element of Fire (1993) was a finalist of the Compton Crook Award and the William Crawford Award. City of Bones (1995), her second novel, received very positive reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews and was recommended by Locus magazine . Her third novel The Death of the Necromancer (1998) was nominated for the Nebula Award .

The Element of Fire and The Death of the Necromancer are set as independent novels in Land Ile-Rien, which is also the setting for the Fall of Ile-Rien Trilogy, which is based on the novels The Wizard Hunters (2003), The Ships of Air (2004) and The Gate of Gods (2005). A revised version of The Element of Fire was released in 2006.

Her short story "The Potter's Daughter", which revolves around one of the main characters from The Element of Fire , first appeared in the anthology Elemental (2006) and then in The Year's Best Fantasy # 7 (2007). Three short stories set before Fall of Ile-Rien appeared in Black Gate Magazine in 2007 and 2008.

Her fantasy series The Books of the Raksura consists of five novels and two collections of short stories. She was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Series in 2018. The novel The Edge of Worlds from this series was featured in The New York Times .

Wells also wrote two teen fantasy novels, Emilie and the Hollow World and Emilie and the Sky World .

She also wrote media tie-ins such as Reliquary and Entanglement in the Stargate Atlantis Universe, Archeology 101, a Stargate SG-1- based short story, and a Star Wars novel, Empire and Rebellion: Razor's Edge .
