Commitment to environmental protection

At the suggestion of Andri Snær Magnason, the city council of Reykjavík switched off all lights in the capital on September 28, 2006 between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The action was intended to draw attention to the problem of light pollution .

In March 2006, Andri Snær Magnason's book Draumalandið - sjálfshjálparbók handa hræddri þjóð , in English Dreamland: A Self-Help Manual for a Frightened Nation , was published, in which he speaks against the aluminum industry and its destructive use of energy in Iceland. In 2006 he was awarded the Icelandic Literature Prize for this. The book served as the basis for a documentary of the same name, in which Andri worked as a co-director. 2011 appeared with Traumland - What remains when everything is sold? the work also in German.

Andri Snær Magnason is co-initiator of an initiative that is developing sustainable cultural and socio-economic projects in the former Toppstöðin power station in Reykjavík .

Dreamland - what remains when everything is sold?

In his book “Dreamland - What remains when everything is sold?” Andri Snær Magnason criticizes the destruction of Icelandic nature by the construction of dams for the benefit of the aluminum industry and the exploitation of natural resources for short-term profit. He shows how the Icelandic government is using Iceland's “green” energy potential to attract investors, primarily to economically strengthen the east coast, which is characterized by emigration and unemployment. Further hydropower plants are being built, including Europe's largest dam, the Kárahnjúkar power plant , for which glacier rivers and waterfalls have been drained and entire areas of land have been flooded.

Andri Snær Magnason also addresses the issue of US military deployments and their influence on the Icelandic economy. Keflavík became a US military base in 1951 and provided around 3,000 jobs in 1953, accounting for around four percent of Iceland's working population. When Keflavík lost its importance to the USA at the end of the 20th century, many Icelanders saw their jobs at risk. Andri criticizes the desperate attempt to maintain a system that is long out of date. He also describes how profit is made from war and how peace is seen as a threat to the economy.

With his book “Traumland”, Andri Snær Magnason appeals to the basic pillars of democracy: freedom of speech and expression. He calls on the Icelandic people to stand up for Iceland's natural resources, to find alternatives and to rely more on their own abilities instead of blindly believing that the aluminum industry is the only way to save eastern Iceland from migration and unemployment.
