Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop
The Clarion Science Fiction Writers' Workshop or Clarion Workshop for short is a renowned, annual six-week course for aspiring professional writers in the fields of science fiction and fantasy literature .
history
The workshop began in 1968 as a kind of spin-off from Damon Knights Milford Writers' Conference . The initiator was the SF author and editor Robin Scott Wilson . Besides Knight, Kate Wilhelm was one of the first lecturers . Until 1971 the course took place at Clarion State College in Pennsylvania , then at Michigan State University in East Lansing . Since 2007 the workshop has been held at the University of California, San Diego .
Participation is based on a fee-based application, which includes two short stories to be submitted. Each year a committee selects 18 participants from the applications submitted. The committee consists of the regular lecturers ( Kelly Link and Gavin J. Grant in 2018 ), a representative from the university and a representative from the Clarion Foundation . Karen Joy Fowler has been chairwoman of the Board of Trustees since 2007 .
Due to the limited number of participants, the selection process, the reputation of the lecturers, who are often highly respected in the genre, and above all due to the fact that a considerable number of the participants in the previous workshops have now become recognized authors, participation in a Clarion workshop already gives a certain degree Prestige and is also regularly mentioned on participants' résumés.
The 18 participants face six lecturers, with each lecturer taking on one week of the course. It is also part of the tradition of the Clarion workshops that the lecturers are often former participants who now pass on their experiences to those who follow.
The Clarion West Writers 'Workshop , which has been taking place on the west coast of the USA since 1971 , as well as the Clarion South Writers' Workshop held at Griffith University in Brisbane , Australia , are organizationally independent, but committed to the principles of the Clarion workshops and reflect this in their name which took place in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009, but is no longer continued. Since the original Clarion workshop is now also taking place on the west coast, to distinguish it from Clarion West, one also speaks of Clarion in San Diego . The workshops held on the east coast before 2007 are also known as Clarion East .
