Steven Barnes
Steven Emory Barnes (* 1. March 1952 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American science fiction - Fantasy - and mystery - writer . He writes screenplays, scripts for comics, animations and magazine articles.
biography
Barnes had a varied education, including postgraduate studies at Los Angeles High School. He continued his education at Pepperdine University , majoring in Communication Arts.
Barnes is married to Tananarive Due, also a writer. The couple live in Lost Angeles and run a blog together . You teach a course at UCLA called The Sunken Place: Racism, Survival & Black Horror . The course is now also held as a webinar . Barnes has a daughter from his first marriage and a son with Tananarive.
Barnes has been practicing various martial arts since 1969 . He wears a black belt in Kempō Karate and one in Judo . He is a sensei of Wu Ming Ta and a prospective teacher of the Filipino Eskrima in stick and knife fighting. He is also an advanced student of Jun Fan Kickboxing in the Bruce Lee method under Sensei Dan Inosanto . Barnes is a teacher of Wu style Taijiquan .
He studies self-defense pistol shooting, preferring the Weaver stance method. He has a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu , is learning Taekwondo and Aikido . Barnes is engaged in hatha yoga ; studies Pentjak Silat (an Indonesian fighting system) with Guru Stevan Plinck and trains in Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga .
Career
Barnes has written several episodes of Outer Limits and Baywatch . His "The Time Machine" episode of The Outer Limits won an Emmy Award . He also wrote the episode "The Chosen" for Stargate SG-1 and "The Sum of All Parts" for Andromeda .
Barne's first science fiction publication was the 1979 novella The Locusts , which he wrote with Larry Niven and which was nominated for a Hugo Award . Barnes then worked with Niven on several other books, including two books with Niven and Jerry Pournelle . Barnes said he had a political argument with the two Conservative writers but enjoyed working with them. He called it "a tremendous learning opportunity". Barne's alternative history novel, Lion's Blood , won the 2003 Endeavor Award . His 2004 Star Wars - Tie-in Obi-Wan Kenobi and the Biodroiden ( The Cestus Deception ) was a New York Times -Bestseller.
Together with his wife Tananarive Due and actor Blair Underwood , Barnes won the 2009 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for In the Night of the Heat: A Tennyson Hardwick Novel
