Baywatch - The Lifeguards of Malibu (Original title: Baywatch ) is a 243 episode American television series that began in 1989 and ended in 2001. The eleven seasons of the series are about the rescue operations of a team of lifeguards . Originally discontinued after the first season (1990) and relaunched a year later with the second season (1991), the stories played up to the ninth season in California and from the tenth season - accompanied by a renaming of the title to Baywatch Hawaii - in Hawaii . Initially, the series was supposed to be continued as Baywatch Down Under in Australia before heading to Hawaii instead.
background
After the first season was initially a flop , leading actor David Hasselhoff took over the production himself with his production company All American Television . The series subsequently developed into the most successful US television series of the 20th century, broadcast in 144 countries and watched by over a billion people worldwide during its most successful period.
Baywatch was known for replacing a large part of the cast with each new season. For example, of the thirteen main characters from season eight, only eight remained in season nine. Even after the first Hawaii season, only four of the original nine roles were left.
In Germany, the series was first broadcast on Erste , later on Sat.1 and as a repeat on Kabel eins . The eleventh and final season from 2000/2001 was not broadcast in Germany for years. It was first broadcast on the station Das Vierte in the summer of 2008 . The final film Baywatch - Wedding in Hawaii from 2003, in which actors from all seasons played and thus brought the series to a close, was shown in Germany for the first time in May 2005 on RTL .
From 1995 to 1997, two seasons of the Baywatch Nights offshoot were also produced, in which David Hasselhoff plays the same character as in Baywatch, but who works as a private detective here .
The original series won u. a. twice the US American television award ASCAP (1996, 1997) and was nominated several times for other awards.
Role of the body
The success of Baywatch is based in particular on the attractiveness of the youthful actors, as well as on the participation of popular sex bombs such as Erika Eleniak , Pamela Anderson and later Carmen Electra , who ensure eroticism in the series. Pamela Anderson has achieved the greatest popularity among the actresses, although she only appears at the beginning of the third season in the double episode "River of No Return". The title alludes to the 1954 film of the same name by Otto Preminger with Marilyn Monroe in the leading role. CJ is already worried - Anderson is only in his mid-twenties - whether she can prevail against the younger ones, who are also applying for a place on the rescue team.
In addition to the attractive "regular cast", severely overweight , handicapped , short or blind characters, often children, repeatedly appeared in the episodes . For the otherness of these people, the main characters were (often the figure of David Hasselhoff, who privately for disabled committed) in a special way compassion and care apply (as supported Hasselhoff's character in the episode (7.6) disabled athletes at the Special Olympics to participate ; in episode (6.18) lifeguards built a wheelchair ramp on the beach for a disabled comedian).

DVD
All 11 seasons of the series (1–9: Baywatch - The Lifeguards of Malibu / 10–11: Baywatch Hawaii) as well as both seasons of Baywatch Nights have been released on DVD on the German market.
The TV version was used as a template for the DVD boxes, which means that the end credits are edited in German. Also, the order of the episodes for some seasons is not that of the US release. In the USA, only the first three seasons have been released so far due to problems with the rights to the other episodes. Since the series was discontinued after season one by the original production company and continued by David Hasselhoff's company, season two is available as season one, season three as season two, and so on. The original first season will be released as a bonus in each season.
Idol
The model for the television series was the lifeguards of the Department of Beaches and Harbors of Los Angeles County , which on contemporary patches as "LA County Dept. of Beaches Lifeguard ”. Responsibility changed in 1994, while the television series was still running, to the LA County Fire Department . Both Baywatch creator Gregory J. Bonann and technical consultant and actor Michael Newman had served as LA County's lifeguards.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department Lifeguard Division oversees the coast from San Pedro in southern Los Angeles County to Malibu in the north and is the largest non-volunteer lifeguard service in the world with over 650 seasonal and 132 permanent lifeguards. The department also operates fireboats .
The English title can be translated as "Bay Watch" and refers to the Santa Monica Bay , which is essentially the area of the LA County Lifeguards. In reality, this is how the main locations of the LA County Lifeguards are referred to, the location at the famous Malibu Pier as "Baywatch Malibu".
In the series, too, the term “Baywatch” is only a synonym for the lifeguard, realistic terms such as “Los Angeles County Lifeguard” are used on patches, signs and vehicles.
The television series adopted numerous details from its role model, such as the red swimming suits , the signal yellow paintwork of the vehicles, the characteristic lifebuoys made of hard plastic or the tower construction of the water rescue stations .
Reviews
The lexicon of international films commented on the pilot film : “The film introduces the future arsenal of people and indicates the conflicts to be expected; it offers a shallow potpourri without surprises, which splashes along stereotypically in form and content. "
