Kelly Link (* 19th July 1969 ) is an American science fiction - writer and publisher of mostly short stories . Some of their stories can be clearly assigned to a genre , but most of them can be described as Slipstream or Magical Realism . This is a mix of: science fiction, fantasy , horror , mystery and realism . Among other awards, she won a Hugo Award , three Nebula Awards and a World Fantasy Award ; In addition, she received in 2018 a grant from the MacArthur Fellowship Program.

biography

Link is a graduate of Columbia University in New York City and UNC Greensboro's MFA program . In 1995 she was a participant in the Clarion East Writing Workshop . She and her husband Gavin Grant ran Small Beer Press in Northampton Massachusetts. She was also co-editor with Ellen Datlow of St. Martin's Press' Anthologies Year's Best Fantasy and Horror for five years . She was also the slush reader for science fiction to be published by Datlow. Slush piles are manuscripts or excerpts that are sent unsolicited to a publisher or publisher. The task of the first reader is to assess whether such a manuscript has the potential for publication and then to pass it on to the publisher.

Link taught at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory , North Carolina in the spring 2006 semester. In addition, she taught or attended a variety of workshops and schools: Bard College , in Annandale-on-Hudson , New York ; Brookdale Community College , Lincroft , New Jersey ; Cleveland State University's Imagination Workshop ; New England Institute of Art & Communications, Brookline , Massachusetts ; Clarion East from Michigan State University ; Clarion West Writers' Workshop in Seattle , Washington ; Smith College , near where she lives in Northampton . She attended the Juniper Summer Writing Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the MFA Program for Poets & Writers .
