biography

Born in Madisonville, Kentucky, he grew up in Owensboro , Kentucky.

In 1961, while studying at Grinnell College , Iowa , he was one of twelve students who traveled to Washington, DC during the Cuban Missile Crisis to support Kennedy's peace race. Kennedy invited her to the White House . A novelty, because for the first time in the USA protest movements were perceived in this way in the media. As part of the invitation, they spoke for several hours with McGeorge Bundy , who was then the President's National Security Advisor . The group received a lot of media attention. The action is seen as the start of the American student peace movement.

After graduating from the University of Louisville in 1964 , Bisson lived in New York repeatedly for the next 40 years until he moved to Oakland , California in 2002. From 1981 he worked as a full-time writer. As a member of the New Left , he ran a "revolutionary" mail order book service from 1985 to 1990 in collaboration with Judy Jensen Jacobin Books.

At the beginning of his career in the 1960s he worked on several comic books. He published the black and white horror magazine Web of Horror from Major Publications , but left the project before the fourth issue was published.

Bisson's first novel was the science fiction novel Wyrldmaker , which was influenced by James Blish's The Seedling Stars . His next novel Talking Man was set in the fantasy genre, in which the protagonist, a titular magician, lived in what was then the American South.

In 1996, he wrote two three-part comic book adaptations of Corwin of Amber and The Guns of Avalon , the first two books of Roger Zelazny's The Chronicles of Amber cycle. In 1997, Bisson completed the design Saint Leibowitz and the Wild Horse Woman by Walter M. Miller, Jr., who died in 1996. It is a sequel to the novel A Canticle for Leibowitz , published in 1960 .

Bisson frequently participates in the monthly "SF in SF" programs in San Francisco.

Bisson was married three times. He has three children with his first wife, Deidre Holst. His second marriage was to Mary Corey. On December 24th, 2004 he married his "long-term work partner" Judy Jensen. The two have a daughter together.
