Robert Crais (born June 20, 1953 in Independence , Louisiana ) is an American crime writer .

Life

Robert Crais grew up in a family of oil workers, trained as a mechanical engineer, wrote short stories, made amateur films, then left Louisiana at the age of 23 and went to Hollywood. In 1976 he was a participant in the renowned Clarion workshop for budding science fiction and fantasy authors. He first implemented his literary talent in Hollywood as a successful writer for TV series. Some of these successful series were broadcast in Germany, such as B. Quincy , Hill Street Police Station , Miami Vice, or Cagney & Lacey . In the mid-1980s, he realized his original desire to write novels and published his first detective novel The Monkeys Raincoat in 1987 with the two private detectives Elvis Cole and Joe Pike . Crais sees himself as influenced by great writers such as Raymond Chandler , Dashiell Hammett , Ernest Hemingway , Robert B. Parker and John Steinbeck . His novels have received numerous nominations and awards for the most important awards in crime fiction. Today the author lives with his family in Santa Monica , California .

The Mystery Writers of America nominated him several times in various categories for the Edgar Allan Poe Award (1988, 1994 and 2001).
