Macavity Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Macavity Award is an American literary award for crime fiction . It is awarded by the Mystery Readers International (MRI), a US-based open association of crime fans and readers worldwide. Works in four categories have been awarded annually since 1987 and five categories since 2006. The award winners are chosen by the members of Mystery Readers International .

The award ceremony takes place every fall at the largest crime festival in the United States, the Bouchercon . The award is named after a character from the humorous poetry collection Old Possum's Book for Practical Cats by TS Eliot , which was also the model for the musical Cats . Macavity is the name of the "gangster cat" that repeatedly evades the pursuit of Scotland Yard .
