Louise Penny
Louise Penny CM (born July 1, 1958 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian journalist and award-winning crime writer .
Life
Louise Penny graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto in 1979 with a Bachelor of Applied Arts (Radio and Television). Immediately thereafter, she worked for 18 years as a broadcast journalist and presenter at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Toronto, Thunder Bay , Winnipeg , Québec and most recently in Montreal before leaving the CBC to pursue her literary inclination.
When Louise Penny was in her mid-30s, she met her future husband Michael Whitehead, who was then head of hematology at the Montreal Children's Hospital . Michael Whitehead passed away in September 2016.
Her detective novels, comparable to the novels by PD James and Elizabeth George , are set in the idyllic community of Three Pines near Québec . The residents of Three Pines are amiable and humane, good - but also endowed with all weaknesses at the same time. Penny's protagonist is Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec .
For her first novel Still Life , there was no publisher in the Canadian-American region. The London-based Headline Publishing Group took over the publication in 2005 and successfully submitted the novel to the British Crime Writers' Association (CWA) as a debut work: Penny's Still Life was awarded the New Blood Dagger in 2006 by the CWA as the best debut novel . The novel received four further literary prizes in 2006 and 2007 from the USA and Canada.
