Anthony Award
The Anthony Awards are US literary prizes that are presented annually at the Anthony Boucher Memorial World Mystery Convention , or “ Bouchercon ” for short . Like the congress, which takes on classic crime and mystery novels , the award is dedicated to the author and critic Anthony Boucher (1911–1968). Boucher wrote the New York Times column Criminals at Large for 17 years , which earned him a high reputation as a critic in the field of crime fiction. He was a co-founder of the Mystery Writers of America . The Anthony Awards count next to thatEdgar and Shamus Award with the most important US crime prizes.
Categories and voting procedures
The Anthony Awards were first given in 1986. The categories vary from year to year, but prizes are regularly awarded for the best English-language novels, debut novels, short stories, original paperbacks and non-fiction works published in the previous year. The organizers of the Bouchercon draw up a list of nominees in advance, based on surveys of fans of the crime genre. As a rule, five title contenders meet in each category and have won the most votes in advance. The winners are also chosen by fans, the Bouchercon visitors, and honored at the congress during an award ceremony. Well-known authors such as Elizabeth George , Thomas Harris , Tony Hillerman , Dennis Lehane and Val McDermid are among the winners of recent years .
In 2000, as part of the Millennium Celebration, the best achievements by crime writers of the past century were honored once. As the best mystery novel sat Daphne du Maurier's 1938 published work Rebecca against Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep ( The Big Sleep , 1939), Agatha Christie's Alibi ( The Murder of Roger Ackroyd , 1926), Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon ( The Maltese Falcon , 1930) and Dorothy L. Sayer's uproar in Oxford ( Gaudy Night , 1935). As the best series, Agatha Christie triumphed with her Hercule Poirot series ahead of Ed McBain (87th Police Station), Marcia Muller (Sharon McCone series), Dorothy L. Sayers ( Lord Peter Wimsey series ) and Rex Stout ( Nero Wolves series ). Christie also received the Best Writer of the Century award, while Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Dorothy L. Sayers and Rex Stout were nominated.
The award categories regularly awarded since 1986 are:
- Best Mystery Novel
- Best First Mystery
- Best Short Story
- Best paperback novel (Best Paperback Original).
Since 1991, a prize has also been awarded in the Best Critical / Nonfiction category.
In addition to the regularly awarded categories, there are also so-called Wildcat Awards , which are special prizes awarded in changing categories, for example Best Series Title (Bill Crider Award for Best Novel in a Series) or Best Website (Best Online Content).
In addition to the Anthony Awards, the Bouchercon also repeatedly honors an author for his life's work (Lifetime Achievement). However, this honor does not count as an Anthony Award.
