Qiu Xiaolong
Qiu Xiaolong ( Chinese 裘小龙 , [ tɕʰjoʊː ˌɕjɑʊˈlʊŋ ]; * 1953 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese writer, university professor , crime novelist and translator in exile in the US .
Life
Qiu Xiaolong grew up in Shanghai. He escaped being sent to the country during the “Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution” due to illness. He learned the English language with the help of Mao quotes, since schools were closed at this stage and no English textbooks were available. In 1976, after the end of the Cultural Revolution, Qiu Xiaolong began studying English and literature. He has translated poems by TS Eliot and American detective novels, e.g. B. by Raymond Chandler and Ruth Rendell , in the Chinese language. He was allowed to travel to the USA in 1988 on the basis of a Ford Foundation grant . After the massacre on Tiananmen Square , he did not return to China for the time being . It was not until 1995 that he traveled to Shanghai again.
Since 1994 he has taught Chinese literature and language at Washington University in St. Louis . He lives in St. Louis with his wife and daughter . His books have been translated into several languages.
