The publisher first became known to the general public with the Angélique series of novels . Newer authors include Charlotte Link , Marc Elsberg , Karin Slaughter , Diana Gabaldon and George RR Martin .

history

Lothar Blanvalet founded the "Buchwarte-Verlag Lothar Blanvalet", named after him, on April 1, 1935 in Berlin. The company was entered in the commercial register in 1937 as a sole proprietorship . The publishing program included humorous works, including books by Jonny Liesegang in Berlin dialect, which marked the fate of a family against the backdrop of war: Det occurred to me uff , Det struck me ooch still uff , since Musike is there and Family Pieselmanns' letters . Many of the titles appeared as field post editions and therefore achieved large print runs.

After the end of World War II , the publisher received a license to resume operations in January 1946. The program focused on fiction - especially crime and adventure novels - as well as art books and graphics . The first titles that were published by Blanvalet were In ! by the football player Hanne Sobek , Nueces and Shorty , Traces in the Cañon , The Golden Hell , The Black Mountains by Clarence E. Mulford and Land ohne Frau by Armin Otto Huber. In addition to German authors such as Albrecht Haushofer ( Moabiter Sonnets ), Lothar Blanvalet also published primarily American literature , for example William Maxwell with Young Leaf on the Tree or Ben Lucien Burman with The Great Stream .

In 1954, Blanvalet started a program under the name Blanvalet-Sport-Taschenbücher , which was discontinued after two editions due to a lack of success. On the other hand, the title The space is getting closer by Donald E. Keyhouse experienced greater demand . The Blanvalet Verlag recorded commercial success with the Angélique novels published from 1956 . The German version was published by Blanvalet before the French original, and by the end of 1963 the first four novels in the series had a circulation of over 680,000 copies. In 1965 a controversy developed between Blanvalet and Bertelsmann about the Angélique series : The company offered the novel as an advertising bonus for new members of the Bertelsmann readers' ring , which Blanvalet criticized as a surprising appropriation. The publishing house refused to cooperate with Bertelsmann since the late 1950s and granted licenses for novels by Anne Golon to competitors of the reading ring.

In 1973 Blanvalet began to issue licenses for his most successful paperback books , including to Rowohlt Verlag . In 1974, Lothar Blanvalet sold his company to the Bertelsmann publishing group for reasons of age, in order to ensure the "continuation of his life's work as a publisher". The publishing house had previously been relocated from Berlin to Munich. Lothar Blanvalet died on January 17, 1979 in Berlin. Together with the publishers Penhaligon and Limes , Blanvalet now forms a publishing unit within the Random House publishing group .
