history

Wolf Jobst settlers

In 1980 Joachim Severin and Wolf Jobst Siedler founded the "Severin & Siedler Verlag" in Berlin . Severin was a film producer and building contractor , and Siedler previously managed Propylaen Verlag . In addition to literature from contemporary history and political works, the publishing house became known in the first few years for its humanities books. In 1983 Joachim Severin left the company: Bertelsmann acquired a total of 75 percent, Wolf Jobst Siedler retained a 25 percent stake. In the mid-1980s, Siedler-Verlag cooperated with Akademie Verlag to jointly publish selected works. After the Siedler publishing house had made losses of several million in the 1990s, the Random House publishing group had significant influence on the management from 1993 onwards .

With a view to Wolf Jobst Siedler's 70th birthday, his successor was arranged: The publisher sold his remaining 25 percent stake to Bertelsmann and continued to work in an advisory capacity. There were isolated differences between Wolf Jobst Siedler and the new management about the direction of the publishing house. In 1998 Wolf Jobst Siedler left the publishing house for good. One of the reasons for this was health problems. The Random House publishing group took over Berlin Verlag , whose founder Arnulf Conradi was appointed to succeed Wolf Jobst Siedler in 1998. After the stake in Berlin Verlag had been sold again, the Siedler Verlag moved completely from Berlin to Munich in 2003. All Bertelsmann book publishers have been bundled there. The publishing house remained largely independent under the umbrella of the publishing group, especially with regard to its program. Thomas Rathnow has been head of Siedler Verlag since 2005.

program

In the early 1980s, the publishing house became known for the series “The Germans and their Nation”. The six volumes on modern German history were commercially and scientifically successful. The work was later supplemented with “German History in Eastern Europe” and other series. In the first years of the Siedler Verlag, the works of George Gilder and Lew Kopelew were particularly well received.

In 1983 the Siedler Verlag published a complete edition of Konrad Adenauer's estate . From 1987 onwards, various books by Helmut Schmidt were published by Siedler-Verlag, of which, for example, “Out of Service” became a bestseller . As an important author at the publishing house, Marion Gräfin Dönhoff published, for example, “Childhood in East Prussia” in 1988. Peter Scholl-Latour wrote several books for the publisher, including “The Delusion of Heavenly Peace: China's Long Awakening” in 1990. In the 1990s, "Hitler's willing executors" by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen was a successful non-fiction book, but its content was also controversial. Hildegard Hamm-Brücher was another well-known author from the Siedler Verlag.

The biography of Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin by Alan Bullock , which Siedler published in 1991, became an international bestseller . Today it is a standard work on the lives of both dictators. To this day, Siedler Verlag has published the memories and memoirs of various people from contemporary history, for example politicians such as Helmut Schmidt , Franz Josef Strauss , Willy Brandt , Hans Dietrich Genscher and Bruno Kreisky . In addition, for example, Oliver Hilme's biography about Ludwig II was published by Siedler-Verlag. In the recent past, works by Federal Presidents Roman Herzog (“Years of Politics”, 2007) and Joachim Gauck (“Winter in Summer, Spring in Autumn”, 2009) have also been published. Siedler last received more attention in 2015 with a biography of Hitler by Peter Longerich . Every year the Siedler Verlag publishes around a dozen novelties.
