The Albrecht Knaus Verlag (also Knaus Verlag , proper spelling KNAUS ) is a German publisher for fiction and nonfiction based in Munich . It was founded in 1978 and is part of the Random House publishing group . In 2018 the publishing house was merged into the newly founded Penguin Verlag . The publishing house was best known for the works of Walter Kempowski .

history

Albrecht Knaus was editor at Piper Verlag and publishing director at Hoffmann und Campe . In 1978 he founded the Albrecht Knaus Verlag, named after him, in Hamburg , which was entered in the commercial register on January 18, 1978 as a sole proprietorship . Albrecht Knaus' program focused on fiction and non- fiction books in pocket book format . The Bertelsmann publishing group was responsible for production and sales of the plants. The collaboration between the publisher and Bertelsmann was initially viewed critically in the industry, with fear of Albrecht Knaus being instrumentalized for the group. According to his own statement, however, he made a conscious decision in favor of the model and argued with his publishing freedom. One of the first authors at Albrecht Knaus Verlag was Walter Kempowski , later, for example, Manfred Bieler with Ewig and three days , Hisako Matsubara with Abendkranich and Leni Riefenstahl with her biography.

In 1984 Albrecht Knaus Verlag was converted into a limited liability company, and the headquarters were moved to Munich at the same time . A branch was retained in Hamburg . In 1994 Albrecht Knaus Verlag concluded a domination agreement with the Bertelsmann publishing group , and in 1999 also a profit transfer agreement . Since then the Albrecht Knaus Verlag has been continued as the imprint of the publishing group. Albrecht Knaus managed the publishing house until 1989, followed by Hans Ewald Dede and Karl Blessing . With regard to further development, it was judged that the publisher has since lacked a "recognizable handwriting". Representatives of the publishing house in turn rejected the criticism as "undifferentiated scolding" and emphasized the independence of all publishers under the umbrella of the Random House publishing group . Dede and Blessing were followed by Karl Heinz Bittel, who published works by authors such as Pascal Mercier and Georg Oswald. After Claudia Vidoni, Wolfgang Ferchl became head of Albrecht Knaus Verlag in 2009 . In spring 2017, the management of the publishing house passed to Britta Egetemeier, before the publishing house was merged with Penguin Verlag a year later.
