Carsten Jensen

Carsten Jensen (born July 24, 1952 in Marstal on Ærø ) is a Danish writer and professor of cultural analysis at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). He wrote novels , travel stories and essays . His most successful novel to date is Vi, de druknede , published in 2006 in German under the title Wir Drowned . In Denmark, the novel was a tremendous success with 120,000 copies sold. It has received numerous prizes and has so far been translated into 10 languages. Representing the history of modern Denmark, the story of its native Marstal is told.

Life

After completing his master's degree in literary studies in 1981 from Københavns Universitet with a treatise on Hans Kirk under the title Folkelighed og utopi , Carsten Jensen became famous in the 1980s through numerous socially critical essays and reports for various Danish newspapers such as Politiken , Dagbladet Information , Ekstra Bladet and Jyllands -Post known. From 1985 to 1990 he was editor of Fretag magazine . Since 2001 he has been teaching cultural analysis at the SDU.

Jensen received several awards, including the Georg Brandes Prize in 1993 for his collection of essays Forsømmelsernes bog and in 1997 De Gyldne Laurbær from the Danish book trade for his travelogues. In 2007 he was awarded the DR Novel Prize and the Danske Banks Litteraturpris for Vi, de druknede , in 2009 the Olof Palme Prize and in April 2012 the Søren Gyldendal Prize .

Jensen is married and has one daughter.
