Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission

The Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) is a fishing organization in the Pacific , based in Kolonia ( Federated States of Micronesia ). It has existed since June 19, 2004. Its current Executive Director has been the Australian Glenn Hurry since September 2010 .

activities

The activities of the WCPFC are based on the Convention on the Conservation and Management of Highly Migratory Fish Stocks in the Western and Central Pacific (WCPFC Convention) signed in Honolulu on September 5, 2000 . The aim of the convention is to ensure the long-term conservation and sustainable use of the highly migratory fish stocks in the western and central Pacific through effective management measures in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 1995 UN Convention on Fish Stocks.

The WCPFC consists of representatives of the contracting parties to the WCPFC Convention. The representatives of other states and entities take part in their work. It meets at least once a year and takes the measures required to implement the objectives of the WCPFC Convention. These are in particular the enactment of protective regulations and the determination of total catches .

A Scientific Committee and a Technical Implementation Committee exist as subordinate bodies of the Commission, which prepare reports and recommendations for the Commission.

Indonesia and the United Kingdom (on behalf of the islands of Pitcairn , Henderson , Ducie and Oeno ) have not yet made use of their right to full membership.

The following are entitled to participate in the commission, but without being independent members, on the basis of appropriate approval from the contracting party responsible for their international affairs in accordance with Article 43 of the WCPFC Convention:

The Republic of China, known as the fishing entity Chinese Taipei , is also entitled to participate in the commission in accordance with Article 9, Paragraph 2 of the WCPFC Convention and a separate agreement based on it .
