Detective novels

Characteristic of the author's detective novels was the description of the most brutal acts, such as B. Torture of victims, child abuse . Her first books were particularly successful in Great Britain , the second work Kisscut (Eng. Title forget mine ) became a bestseller there . Since 2003, works by Karin Slaughter have also been published in German-speaking countries, initially by Wunderlich Verlag .

Grant County Series

The main character of her first crime novel with the German title Belladonna and the other works of the so-called “Grant County Series” (English-language publication from 2001 to 2007) is the pediatrician Sara Linton . Sara Linton is from Heartsdale, the largest city in fictional Grant County. After graduating from school as the best of the year, she received a scholarship to study medicine at the private Emory University in Atlanta , which she graduates again as the best of the year. Her specialist training to become a pediatrician takes place at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where she also received further training in forensic medicine. She returns to her place of birth to take over a pediatric practice there. To finance the transfer fee for the practice takeover, she accepts the position as Chief Medical Officer and Coroner of Grant County. During a medical accompaniment for a football team, she meets Jeffrey Tolliver, an ex-football player and future police chief of Grant County, whom she later marries. She separates from him because of an affair, but has to continue working with him professionally. The love was never completely cold, so that after a while they marry again. As Sara could not have children due to injuries as a result of rape during her specialist training, the two decide after many years to adopt a child. Shortly after the adoption authorities accepted, Jeffrey died from a letter bomb in his wife's arms. She then left Grant County, settled again in Atlanta, and started working at Grady Hospital again.

Will Trent series

In 2006, the author began with Triptych (dt. Titles Muted ) another series ( "Will-Trent" series "). It is the main character Will Trent determined, an official of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) in Atlanta. Compared to her previous crime thrillers in the Grant County series, this series marks the change of scene from the small town to the big town. The character of Will Trent is laid out with great self-doubt. He is a former orphan who, despite several attempts, could not find an adoptive parent There are many secrets about his life, with the resulting behavior in his dealings, especially with people, during work and in private life, which are only revealed bit by bit in their backgrounds and causes. For example, he tries to get one in front of his fellow men To hide pronounced dyslexia , he is only more or less pro forma married to a childhood friend from the orphanage (Angela "Angie" Polaski) The first books in the series deal, among other things, with the complicated romantic approach of Trent and the doctor Sara Linton.

Slaughter wrote short stories for Like a Charm - A Novel in Voices , a collection of short stories in 2004 . In addition, she published Martin Misunderstood as an audio book in 2008 , which cannot be assigned to any series with regard to the actors involved and received negative reviews. It was published by BBC Audiobooks and AudioGO and was nominated for the Audie Awards for the best audio book of the year in the humor category in 2009. In 2011 Karin Slaughter won the International Thriller Award in the Silver Bullett Award category for her “outstanding efforts” in literature, and in 2013 she received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for the best short story.
