Clarence E. Mulford

Clarence Edward Mulford (born February 3, 1883 in Streator , Illinois , † May 10, 1956 in Portland , Maine ) was an American author and the inventor of the character Hopalong Cassidy .

Life

Mulford was the son of Clarence Cohansey Mulford and Minne Grace Kline. In 1920 he married Eva Emily Wilkinson, who died in 1933. Mulford himself died at the age of 73 after surgery.

Hopalong Cassidy

In 1904 Mulford created the figure of the cowboy Hopalong Cassidy ; the first book in which Cassidy appeared was published in 1907. Mulford researched carefully for his stories that took place in the Wild West, but did not make it to the West himself until 1926. Hopalong Cassidy would be the hero of numerous short stories - 28 from Mulford alone, but the character was later adopted by other authors -, films and comics. In 1944, actor William Boyd Mulford bought the rights to the character. Boyd had previously changed the character Hopalong Cassidy according to his ideas.
