Caroline Graham (born July 17, 1931 in Nuneaton , Warwickshire ) is an English crime novelist .

Life

After the death of her mother, she was raised by her father alone between the ages of 6 and 13. At 14, she left school and worked in various factory jobs. From 1953 to 1955 she was in the Navy before she married and earned a master's degree in theater studies through a second course . Through theater work, she came to radio and television as a journalist in the 1970s . From 1977 she also wrote several radio play episodes and scripts.

She has been writing novels since 1982 . Her most famous works are the crime novels with Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby . Her first Barnaby book, The Riddles of Badger's Drift , was selected by the British Association of Crime Writers CWA as one of the 100 best crime novels and was awarded the Macavity Award in 1989. Her thrillers are set in rural England in the tradition of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple .

Her books were successfully filmed as a television series by the British broadcaster ITV from 1997; Caroline Graham herself wrote one of the scripts . The first episodes were based on their stories, after which the series was continued independently with John Nettles in the leading role as Midsomer Murders and now has over 120 episodes.

The television series is an export hit worldwide. It has been a success in many countries for years. The German rights are held by ZDF, which shows the consequences in loose succession on Sunday evening programs.
